Cruisemasters are subject to AD 63-06-02 that requires a recurring 100 hour inspection of the rudder pedal torque tube bellcrank.  The AD concerns elongation of the holes in the bellcrank where the rudder springs and cables attach.  This AD can be terminated by replacing or modifying the bellcranks in accordance with Bellanca engineering change order EAI 93021.

The original bellcrank is made out of aluminum and when I inspected the ones installed in the aircraft the hole had been considerably elongated.  They were outside of the limits of the AD.  Notice the elongation marked in red.

The fix is to install a new bellcrank.  The updated bellcrank part is made out of steel with a washer welded on to reinforce the rudder cable attachment hole.  The steel part is the only version of the part available from Bellanca Inc.

Be careful if your purchase replacement bellcranks from Bellanca Incorporated.  There was a design change partway through the 230 production run that makes the bellcranks longer.  Bellanca only has the longer bellcranks, not the short version required by my aircraft.  I had to cut the longer bellcranks down to size.  An easier (and cheaper) fix might be to fabricate new short bellcranks from scratch using 4130 sheet steel and matching the dimensions of the old aluminum bellcranks.  Then weld on a washer.
